Pune swine flu toll rises to 99

Pune, Nov 4 (PTI) Two more persons, including a pregnant woman, succumbed to swine flu here, taking the toll in the viral infection in the city to 99, health officials said today. 28-year-old pregnant woman Surekha died three days ago in a hospital.

Her test reports yesterday confirmed that she was affected by the virus. The infection killed another 29-year-old youth yesterday -- Navnath Thombre-- who had been on ventilator since his admission in a hospital on October 30.

The health machinery has undertaken a massive awareness campaign for early detection of suspected swine flu cases and opened up of more screening centres in and around Pune which has registered maximum flu fatalities in the country since the death of a school girl on August 3. A senior health official said authorities were bracing for the "second wave" of the virus in the winter, which is expected to be more virulent.
