Mon, Oct 26 11:02 PM

Mumbai, Oct 26 (PTI) Mobile operator Idea Cellular today said CBI has asked the company for its accounts and 2G licence documents in connection with alleged irregularities in allocation of spectrum to new operators by the Department of Telecom (DoT). "Yes, we also had a request from the CBI. We have given them whatever data they sought, including prior balances, profit and loss accounts and documents on (2G) licences," Idea Cellular Ltd Managing Director Sanjeev Aga told reporters here today.

The CBI on October 22 raided offices of the DoT in New Delhi to look into the documents relating to the award of licenses in January 2008 to new telecom operators. The agency searched total of 19 premises, including offices of 10 telecom firms and some of the DoT offices again the next day.

CBI has filed a case against unknown officials of DoT and unidentified private persons and companies for criminal conspiracy and under Prevention of Corruption Act. Ever since licences were issued last year, there has been widespread criticism that the exchequer has lost thousands of crores on account of alleged irregularities.

Telecom Minister A Raja has responded by saying that all procedures laid down by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) were followed and the decisions were taken after consulting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
