Colombo, Jul 25 (PTI) India suffered an early jolt, losing Virender Sehwag after Sri Lanka declared the first innings at 600 for 6 in second session of the third day of the first cricket Test match here. India were 74for 1 at tea with Gautam Gambhir batting on 35 and Dravid on 14 in 16 overs at the Sinhalese Sports Club grounds after Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene declared the innings 40 minutes into the second session.
Sehwag and Gambhir gave a flying start to India and Sehwag was looking dangerous as he drove Chaminda Vaas to a cover boundary in the very first over. Gambhir followed it with a flowing drive to the long-off boundary of Nuwan Kulasekara in the next over.
Jayawardene chose to set an attacking field to put Indian batsmen under pressure after tiring them out on the field for over two and a half days. Taking advantage of unmanned boundaries,Sehwag went on to hammer Vaas for two consecutive fours, one at mid-on and then at point.
Earlier, both Dilshan and Vaas were rotating the strikes when boundaries were hard to come by even as the Lankan batsmen were looking for runs. Dilshan looked for every opportunity rippingHarbhajan Singh to the cover boundary on one occasion.
