Islamabad, Jul 23 (PTI) Pakistan's ruling coalition today decided that parliament would frame a national policy to counter extremism and militancy while the PPP-led government continues dialogue and political engagement to restore peace in the troubled tribal areas bordering Afghanistan. A marathon meeting of the coalition chaired by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani also asserted that "Pakistan's territory will not be used for terrorist attacks" and that "attacks from external forces on Pakistan's sovereign soil" would not be tolerated.
It was not clear whether the meeting discussed the contentious issue of reinstatement of judges of Supreme Court. PML-N, which had joined the government originally, later quit it after the PPP-led administration failed to restore the judges.
The meeting, attended by Pakistan People's Party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif, Awami National Party chief Asfandyar Wali Khan and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam leader Fazlur Rehman, was held against the backdrop of calls by the US for Pakistan to do more to contain the activities of Taliban and Al Qaida elements in the tribal areas. The coalition leaders were also briefed by army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and top officials of the military and interior ministry on the security situation in the tribal areas and the restive North West Frontier Province.
Briefing reporters after the seven-hour-long meeting, Information Minister Sherry Rehman said the ruling alliance believed "Pakistan's national security and internal stability is paramount and that no one will be allowed to challenge the writ of the state". PTI.
