Chandigarh, July 12 (PTI) The Punjab Government would soon set up a State Cotton Council for the promotion of textile industry in a big way, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said today. Speaking after inauguration of a one-day annual conference of Textile Association of India (TAI)on 'Technological Process Innovation' here, Badal said the emerging textile scenario in the country as well as in Punjab was favourable for the growth of textile industry.

"However, to sustain this growth, it is needed to improve infrastructure facilities for the industry," he said and hoped that this council would certainly prove to be a milestone in boosting the prospects of textile industry in the region. The State Cotton Council would consist of cotton growers, textile manufacturers, cotton farm experts and officers of the state government, he said, adding that the basic objective of the council would be to enhance the productivity of cotton.

Badal pointed out that textile and clothing trade was pegged at USD 440 billion and continued to play a significant role in global economy. This sector is also an important segment of the Indian manufacturing industry that accounts for over 20 per cent of industrial production and is closely linked with the agricultural and rural economy.
