LONDON (Reuters) - The shortlist for the John Moores contemporary painting prize, which helped launched the career of top artists like Peter Doig, was announced on Thursday.

A record 3,222 paintings were submitted for the prize, held every two years and celebrating its 25th edition in 2008. They were whittled down to a shortlist of 40 from which the winner will be named on Sept. 20, receiving 25,000 pounds ($50,000).

"There's no art for airports or corporate foyers in this show," said Graham Crowley, one of the judges.

He said that the world of contemporary art often had more to do with hype and celebrity than the quality of the work.

"Modern art is inflated with celebrity," he told Reuters. "I'm talking about what people do back on planet earth, not in media land. This is of a very different order. It's not about whimsy and personality, it's actually something much tougher."

He said that based on the entries, it would appear that British painting was "in rude health".

The full list of the 40 artists competing for the award can be found via Web site: http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/mediacentre/ .

The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool will hold an exhibition of the shortlisted works running from Sept. 20 to Jan. 4, 2009.
